OpenOffice
OpenOffice (or as its officially called, OpenOffice.org), is a free Office package. It can easily replace Microsoft Office, as it looks and functions in basically the same way. It has a spreadsheet program (like Excel), a word processor (like Word), a presentation system (like Powerpoint), and a database system (like Access). Oh, and did I mention it was free!.
I use it almost exclusively for all my Office needs. I find it more stable and without the crazy quirks that Microsoft Office has. It can also open and save Microsoft Office files.
The next version should be release in early October 2008, and from the look of the beta releases, its got all the new bells and whistles that you would find in Microsoft Office.
If you haven't tried it yet, and don't have Microsoft Office, get it now! You can thank me later for saving you a couple hundred dollars :)
